Hawaiian Floral Cake
It is that time of the year again: my daughter’s birthday! and this year is a milestone year when she turns 13!! Like every year, she makes a drawing of the themed cake she’d like and then I bake it.
This year’s baked commission was a Hawaiian themed cake with 🌺 hibiscus 🌺 (her favorite flower) and gold drips on the edge.
I spent a couple afternoons playing with gum paste to make the flowers. I had loads of fun, my hands ended up hot pink and orange and I was craving something salty after staring at sugar for so long.
I made plumerias, hibiscus, anthuriums and flamboyant flowers along with some foliage. They dried for a couple days.
Then I got into baking the cake: 3 layers of vanilla sponge cake with a super SUPER yummy mango and passion fruit curd in between layers. The smooth pink buttercream and gold drips have a hint of lemon. The recipe for the cake is from King Arthur flour and the curd recipe is at the bottom of this page.
Right before the party I placed the flowers on the cake and voila! the girls were delighted!
Each cake is an opportunity to become a better artist/baker and it is definitely a source of joy and memories for my growing daughter. ❤️
