PaperGirl Spotlight: Cuckoo Wood dress & storybook
I had a cuckoo clock in my bedroom as a kid. I loved it! I got it in Disneyland when I was 5 and it hung about my bed all through my childhood, until it got lost or “disappeared” when we moved to a new home. Years later, my dad and his wife, brought a real and magnificent cuckoo clock from Spain for my daughter’s nursery. I loved seeing it tic-tac as waited for her to fall asleep (the cuckoo bird mechanism could be silenced at night).

When I started designing the Forest collection for PaperGirl, I knew I had to do a cuckoo themed dress and storybook. There are many tales, some historic, some magical, about the origin of the cuckoo clock in Bavaria. I chose to write my own, loosely inspired by some folk tales. My story tells of a lonesome clock maker that lived in the forest and one cold Winter afternoon, burdened with nostalgia for the birds that flew South, he sets out to make clocks whose bird song will keep him company until the arrival of Spring.
In making the artwork I experimented a bit with the style, using fine liner markers that reminded me of woodgrain, feathers and carving marks, all of which I felt was appropriate for the story. 🐦🕰
